Being hearing impaired or deaf in a first world country can be enough of a challenge, but to have that same challenge in sub-saharan Africa can completely cripple a life. Very few people know sign language in this part of the world and so being deaf often means being relegated to the confines of your own mind, unable to communicate with another human being for as long as you live. In this video young Patrick Otema has been deaf nearly his whole life. Unable to speak with his own family he is withdrawn and listless. But that’s about to change.
